Do you have osteoporosis?
The evaluation of bone health has become an essential component
of patient wellness. Each year it is estimated that more women break
a bone due to osteoporosis than have a heart attack, stroke, or
breast cancer combined.
While many patients can be at risk for osteoporosis, certain
people are more likely to develop the disease. The following factors
increase your risk:
-
Women, especially past menopause
-
Women with early menopause (before age 45)
-
Caucasian or Asian
-
Small, thin frame
-
Family history of osteoporosis
-
Taking certain
medications such as steroids (like prednisone), thyroid hormone
replacement, anti-seizure medication, antacids that contain
aluminum, heparin, and certain cancer-treatment medications
-
Smoker and/or heavy drinker
-
Inactive lifestyle
-
Diet low in calcium
One of the best ways to know whether a patient has osteoporosis
is through a bone mineral density (BMD) exam. Typically, BMD is
measured by a quick, easy procedure known as a DXA (dual energy
x-ray absorptiometry) evaluation.
McHenry Medical Group is recognized as a community leader in the
diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. We balance the latest
technology in bone density measurement with a personal, caring
approach to ensure that you receive bone care with the attention and
respect you deserve.
Discuss your risk factors with
your physician and ask about getting a referral for a bone density
exam. Most insurance carriers, including Medicare, cover the DXA
exam.
The Bone Density Department is located in suite 304
of the McHenry Medical Building, 1541 Florida Ave., Modesto, CA.
Appointments may be scheduled by calling the department at (209)
577-3388 ext. 2303.
