Internal Medicine physicians provide primary care services to adults throughout their lives.

• Preventive care with an emphasis on a healthy lifestyle, including weight control and smoking cessation

• Monitoring of chronic conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, and osteoarthritis

• Coordination of care with other specialists and care settings

McHenry Medical Group currently has five Internal Medicine providers on staff. Take a few moments to learn about them, their backgrounds and interests. 

Humayun Abbas, M.D., joined McHenry Medical Group on September 1, 1999, and is a shareholder and officer in the corporation. Dr. Abbas became board certified in internal medicine in 1997, having completed his residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center. Originally from Pakistan, Dr. Abbas has a large family with 5 children and has lived in Modesto for about 6 years. Dr. Abbas speaks Urdu, Hindi, and Persian, in addition to English. Dr. Abbas is currently open to new patients.

James W. Boozer, M.D., joined McHenry Medical Group in August of 1989 and is a shareholder and officer in the corporation. Dr. Boozer became board certified in internal medicine in 1987, having completed his residency at University of California Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. Dr. Boozer was born in Whittier, California, and he and his family have lived in Modesto since 1989. When Dr. Boozer is not at McHenry Medical Group, he serves as the medical director for the Modesto Gospel Mission and as team physician for a local high school football team. Dr. Boozer speaks Spanish, in addition to English.

Dr. Boozer believes the best outcome for a patient’s health occurs when the patient takes responsibility for his or her choices and the physician listens and is sensitive to the patient’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Dr. Boozer is currently open only to new seniors.

Barbara Kennedy-Funtila, M.D., joined McHenry Medical Group in July of 1997 and is a shareholder and officer in the corporation. She completed her training at the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark, NJ, and was board certified in internal medicine in 1997. Originally from the Philippines, she also completed her residency training in internal medicine and has resided in Modesto since 1990. 

Dr. Kennedy-Funtila believes there is goodness in all people. Dr. Kennedy-Funtila is currently open to new patients.

Prithvi Shankar, M.D., came to McHenry Medical Group in August 2005. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Texas Medical Center in Houston in 2003 and subsequently managed a busy private clinic in Chennai, India. A sports enthusiast, Dr. Shankar participated in a charitable bike ride from Houston to Austin, a distance of 200 miles. He and his wife now make their home in Modesto.  Dr. Shankar is fluent in Malayalam, Telegu, and Tamil, as well as English. He is currently open to new patients. 

Jo Ann Friedrich, P.A., is McHenry Medical Group's first licensed physician assistant, providing services at the practice since December 2007. A graduate of Stanford University School of Medicine Primary Care Associate Program, Jo Ann has more than 30 years of experience as a P.A. in California. She is the author of two books, The Pre-Menstrual Solution and Sleep Matters, and sees patients for general medical problems; women's health issues, menopause, PMS; nutrition, lifestyle, and exercise counseling; sleep medicine; and minor surgical procedures.
